The Lisa J. Flaxman Fund for the Celebration of the Performing Arts honors the life of Lisa J. Flaxman, a North Chevy Chase and Rosemary Hills mother who passed away on January 14, 2009 after a long battle with breast cancer. Lisa actively supported performing arts and other charitable endeavors in our schools and community. She was a fan of Bill Harley, singing along and listening with her children in the car to his songs and stories. She had long looked forward to bringing him here to join us. She founded musiKids, Inc., which has brought music to thousands of young children in Montgomery County. She also founded musiKares, which established a program to collect recorded music for area hospitals, including especially pediatric wards. Lisa also was a performer in our community, in choral and theater groups, singing the National Anthem at Bethesda Big Train games, and sharing her poetry with us. This fund will honor Lisa's legacy of support for the performing arts in our community. Funding may be used to support performing arts celebrations, elementary school artist-in-residence programs, public school community performances, and scholarships for local students to attend performing arts institutions and/or to gain access to private arts instruction.
